Our annual MacLeod Lorway Ladies Valentine’s FUNspiel has officially come to end in a surprising finish. Nine teams came together to play for the trophy and for the very first time we had two teams tied for 1st place after 3 round robin games. Team Dobson and Team MacDonald both won all their games and ended tied in points. In past years we had a draw to the button by all teams during the event to determine who would win if there was a tie. It figures the one year that we don’t do it, there ends up being a tie. It was discussed with both teams and they decided to split the prize money and share the trophy. In 3rd place was Team Gunn.
This year’s event was played in honor of Mary Connolly who lost a courageous battle with cancer last year. Thanks to the women in the club who helped plan this event in her honor. Ruth Gunn spoke about how Mary welcomed her and other newcomers to the club and her contributions to the club. She presented her family with a certificate acknowlging 25 years as a club member. Nancy O’Regan thanked everyone for raising $217.00 to be donated to Pancreatic Cancer Canada in Mary’s memory. Club members and family members watched a presentation of highlights of Mary’s years of curling. Paula Dobson spoke of Mary’s qualities as a player, skip, volunteer and friend to many. She then announced a Woman’s Most Sportsmanlike Award to begin at next year’s women’s bonspiel and presented the plaque to Mary’s family.
The club would like to thank our major sponsor, MacLeod Lorway, who has sponsored this event for many years. Other sponsors this year for prizes were Guysborough Pharmachoice, Cutting Loose Hair Design, Janet Grant, Crazy Daisy, and Cast Away Café. We would also like to thank our bonspiel team of Byron, Amy Leigh, and Breanne, and our ice prep team of George, Wayne, Gary, and Phil. Our Curlers and guests were fed breakfast, lunch and dinner by Gary, Collie, and Phil with help from Maurice. Thanks to our bar staff led by Donna with help from Byron and Phil. Finally, thanks to all the members who donated food for the event.
