Club Updates
Thank you Brian, Phil, Avery’s — and buyers…..
I want to present four thank-you acknowledgements.
To Brian Farrell, a tad late but still a sincere thanks, for checking 900+ ducks to make certain they were “swimable” and then for sorting them again after their race. Because the ducks are simple plastic forms, they must be checked again next summer prior to their race to ensure that they will continue to swim and not decide to sink.
To Randy and Sharon Avery, a thank you for asking the curling rink to conduct a BBQ at the Independent today. With that thanks I want to express our gratitude for the fact that all BBQ goodies were sold to the rink at Avery’s costs. How much profit made today is unknown at this time — since we have yet to pay our bill. I can assure you that, after the rink pays our bill on Tuesday, we made enough profit to pay for a couple of months of the rink’s phone bills.
To the curling chef: Phil O’Regan, thank you for being there today to cook away while I did the easy stuff such as keep him supplied with burgers, dogs, plus buns — and collected the money. 🙂
The remaining thank you goes to those who purchased the burgers, dogs, pop and water. Without you it would have been much different day.
As far as I am aware, today “should be” the concluding curling rink fundraiser of this summer. The next necessary calling will be for putting the ice back in late October for a tentative early November startup. It seems strange to be thinking of installing curling ice with the present heatwave but that is the reality of our rink’s existence and survival.
Enjoy the balance of your summer, stay safe — and keep your eyes open for curlers to join us in October/November as the Chedabucto Curling Club prepares for the 2016-2017 season.
My best wishes to all.
Ray
BBQ at Avery’s Independent….
There will be a BBQ tomorrow at Avery’s Independant store celebrating the ‘Amazing Owner’s Sale’. Our club was asked to run the BBQ from 11am until 2pm. Below is the poster for the event. All profit goes back to our club. Come on out and celebrate and help out both the store and our club. Cake will be provided indoors at the store.
Ducky Race results are in…
With Ray’s absence at his marathon in Barrington I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who attended our annual Ducky Race & Chicken BBQ yesterday at the club. Crowds were steady for most of the afternoon until we got rained and thunder clapped on just after the race. By all accounts it was another great fundraiser for our curling club. All but 5 chicken dinners were bought and most of the ducks sold. The stick draw had only a few prizes left. The winners of the Ducky Race were Joseph Atkins in 1st place with $500, 2nd place went to Anna Connolly with $200 and 3rd place was Winnie Steeger with $100. Thank you to Winnie for donating her money back to the club.
Many hands made this event truly successful… Thanks go out to Ray for getting things started with setup before he left, with Neil DeCoff, Danny Worth, Ira Corkum and myself getting the fencing and bricks all out and up. To BA Corkum and Mary E. A. Connolly for the Stick Draw setup and help from Marg and Mary K. Connolly on the day of. To Kay Chisholm and Paula Dobson for their kitchen and cooking help with potato help from Margaret Hadley. To Kay for her help with ducky tickets setup (and all of the other behind the scenes work) and Mable Luddington and Wayne Hyam for their help on the day of for organizing tickets coming in. To Holly Nahrebecky for her help in the bar, to Lois MacDonald for helping with the chicken dinner tickets, to our chicken dinner cookers: along with myself we had Brian MacDonald, Don Armstrong, Jim Muise, Chris West, and David O’Connor. Also thanks to Paul Connolly who came early to help get tables and chairs out. I’d like to thank Neil and Mary Theresa & Danny Rodgers for their musical contribution especially when the storm was getting close. With the duckies I’d like to thank Steve Myette, Peter Simpson, Mike Nicholson, and Jim Muise. Also like to thank the Rec students who came out to do face painting. A big thank you goes out to Mike Nicholson who oversaw all the event in Ray’s absence. Finally thanks to all who helped get things cleared away outside as the rain started coming down. Now I am sure I have missed a few names but as I said before many hands make this event a truly successful. Now it time to take a rest before the curling season starts up again. See you all in October.

Jobs to be done at BBQ / Ducky race / games of chance…..
Several members have committed to various jobs at this Sunday’s BBQ / Ducky race but more hands are needed. (Males’ or females’ welcome.) Phil and I are going out on Thursday morning at 10:00 to move the fire-pit bricks and the entertainment platforms plus get the beer garden fence erected. We will need some hands to assist.
On Sunday morning the tables and chairs must be moved out of the ice-making plant room to the beer garden’s enclosure via Steve Myette’s truck at 11:00 AM. Hands are definitely needed for that task.
We will need three people to be in the brook to drop the ducks into the stream at the start line at a time to be determined on Sunday afternoon pending the tide. One more person is needed to hold the finish-line net.
(Mike Nicholson is your guy-in-charge for the ducky race.)
A big job that tends to fall to a very few is the cleanup at the end of the day after the chicken is sold (approx. 4:00 PM). All garbage and meal scraps need to be collected and sorted for a Monday-morning pickup.
The fence must be dismantled and returned to storage. The tables and chairs must also be returned to their storage. If it rains the chairs go into the club room (and not stacked) to enable them to dry and then are returned to the back room at a later date. The tables can be returned as usual.
Since I will not be there on Sunday, Mike Nicholson has kindly agreed to replace me — for the day. 🙂 So as to ensure that the necessary workers are available — please — check with Mike to see if anything needs to be done before you leave. Mike is Sunday’s go-to guy. (Thank you Mike.)
Please keep a frequent check on your emails for any updates that might be coming your way as we get things arranged for Sunday.
Cheers — and thanks to all who make our rink’s BBQ/Ducky race/Games of chance fundraiser weekend an annual successful event.
Ray
